Artist Statement by Don Augstein
I am fortunate to be passionate about my work. I do
not begin any project knowing exactly what the end result will be. The general idea is always there,
however, change is inevitable. I'm never without a sketchbook so I am constantly adding new and
revisiting old drawings. Sometimes the drawings are left in the sketchbook and other times they
develop into detailed pieces. My greatest satisfaction is seeing the natural beauty of wood, the
balance, the form and the sustainabilty transformed into artistic furnishings.
Raised in New York and being the curious type, I
explored many avenues from building a kit boat when I was ten, which many happy days on the lake were
spent, to an Austrailian designed boat in college and later building modern furniture
with Louis Brown. My background coupled with my love of architecture lead me to a successful career in
residential remodeling and design. Over the years I was inspired by various clients to create
furnishings for their homes and that is where Indigo Wood and Metalworks came to
life.
Since 2000 I have been designing and
building tables, cabinets, and fun sculpture on speculation and commission. I
enjoy exploring with various woods, blending them together, adding soft metal, and sometimes
colorful glass.
My work can be seen at various art shows and Art Works Gallery Co-op
in Grass Valley, California.
I am happy to make appointments. When in the Gold
Country stop by Grass Valley, visit my shop and see my latest work. I am always working on something
new.
